On the trail of the Thirty Years' War
the Historic Trail.
It leads through the city forest to the original sites of the Thirty Years' War, when Heidelberg was conquered by Catholic troops under General Tilly. The siege of Heidelberg began in July 1622. From secured positions, the imperial Bavarian attackers fired down on the city and castle.
On September 16, the besiegers entered the city and forced the Heidelberg garrison to surrender on September 19, 1622.
Until now, it was difficult to imagine what it looked like on the bare heights at that time. Now, a visualization of these historical moments has been successfully introduced: At a total of 10 sites, the city's defenses and the fortified positions of the invaders are illustrated with explanations and impressive 3D visualizations.
