Environment and sustainability capital
Environmental and climate protection is a tradition in Heidelberg. Over the decades, Neckarstadt has developed its reputation as an environmental and sustainability capital with many network partners. As early as 1992, Heidelberg was the first major German city to adopt a municipal climate protection concept. The world's largest passive house settlement is currently being built in Heidelberg in the new Bahnstadt district, which was voted Passive House Region of the Year in the international "Passive House Award 2014" competition. Heidelberg has already received the European Sustainable City Award twice and is participating as a model municipality in the Federal Ministry's 100% Climate Protection Master Plan. In 2015, Heidelberg received the Global Green City Award at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The ICCA2019 climate protection conference took place in Heidelberg in May 2019.
