The Bergstraße

Short facts

  • Lorsch

"This is where Germany starts to feel like Italy."

The climate of the Bergstrasse, which is protected from the cold easterly winds by the Odenwald, is exceedingly mild and provides temperatures that are above the national average. Visible signs are the many plants, such as almonds, peaches, and apricots, which are normally native to southern Europe, and of course, the wine, which ripens to its well-known quality thanks to around 1,600 hours of sunshine. While snow and cold and wet weather still prevail elsewhere, spring sometimes transforms the Bergstrasse into a colourful bouquet as early as mid-March: the yellow and white of the forsythia and almond trees are then followed by the blossoming of apricots, peaches, cherries, and apple trees. Through the colours of the ornamental cherries and magnolia trees, the tree blossom continues. Usually, just in time for Mother's Day, lilacs also bloom in all their colours.

But not only the spring blossoms invite you to stay: Numerous sights such as historic marketplaces, natural timbered houses, castles, and palaces, as well as a rich cultural offering, make the Bergstrasse worth experiencing. Theater, international vaudeville, and cabaret stages await you with varied performances.

The open-air performances of the Heppenheim Festival in the Kurmainzer Amtshof, the summer festivals in the Fürstenlager State Park or at Auerbach Castle, and the Weinheim Cultural Summer are appreciated as special cultural treats.

Recreational facilities such as indoor and outdoor swimming pools, bathing lakes, riding, and tennis facilities, golf, and miniature golf set (almost) no limits to the sporting drive. On the well-marked hiking and biking trails of the nature park Bergstraße-Odenwald, which lead to many sights, you can experience the region by foot or by bike close to nature.

Many attractive destinations "around" such as Heidelberg, Speyer, Worms, and especially the Odenwald make the Bergstrasse not only interesting for a short vacation but also invite you to stay longer. Come and see for yourself!
