The University Hospital is one of the ten largest hospitals in the whole of Germany.
In ultra-modern clinics geared to the needs of patients, all diseases, especially severe and complex clinical pictures, are treated by outstanding physicians and medical assistants. The latest research findings are always taken into account to ensure the best possible therapy.
With approximately 800,000 outpatients and 100,000 inpatients treated each year, the University Hospital is one of the ten largest hospitals in Germany. Its reputation extends beyond the country's borders.
Outstanding focal points of medical care are:
Tumor diseases: As the site of the renowned German Cancer Research Centre, Heidelberg is known for its expertise in tumor therapy. Patients benefit, for example, from outstanding surgical skills in major abdominal operations, extensive experience in the treatment of lymphomas and leukemia in children as well as adults, or from the state-of-the-art and gentle radiation therapy at the Heidelberg Ion Beam Therapy Centre (HIT). At the National Centre for Tumor Diseases (NCT), tumor patients are cared for jointly by physicians from different specialties as well as by nursing staff and counselling services. All those involved strive to select the best treatment option according to the current state of knowledge and, at the same time, to include other health-promoting aspects such as psychosocial factors or nutrition in the treatment.
Transplantation medicine: Heidelberg's transplantation medicine is one of the oldest and leading in Germany. In particular, kidneys, livers, hearts, and blood stem cells are transplanted. Preparation for transplantation as well as follow-up care is carried out jointly by internists, surgeons, and immunologists, i.e. experts in rejection problems. Given the often immense psychological stress associated with transplantation, trained psychologists and social workers are also involved in the care.
Cardiovascular disease: The treatment of cardiovascular diseases, as well as their research, represents another focus of the hospital. With the establishment of the first Chest Pain Unit in Germany, patients with acute heart pain, such as in the case of a heart attack, are offered a particularly fast and efficient treatment option. Special attention continues to be paid to the research and treatment of myocardial insufficiency. The cardiovascular surgery team offers the entire spectrum of surgical procedures for children and adults, such as bypass operations, interventions on heart valves or for congenital heart defects.
Neurological and neurosurgical disorders: Patients suffering from diseases of the brain or spinal cord are cared for by competent experts in the neurology and neurosurgery departments. All conventional treatment options are used, as well as state-of-the-art surgical techniques, such as procedures using microsurgical techniques, which reduce the risk of surgery and allow for a faster healing process.
Paediatric diseases: In addition to the care of tumor diseases in children, Heidelberg Children's Hospital has made a name for itself in particular in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsies and in the care of metabolic diseases. In addition to treatment, consideration is also given to the special situation of families with seriously ill children, for example by enabling accommodation for parents in the immediate vicinity of the Children's Hospital or offering all-day, flexible-time care for siblings.
Orthopaedic diseases: The treatment options at the Orthopaedic Clinic range from conservative therapies and minor outpatient procedures to major surgical interventions. The physicians focus, for example, on the treatment of paraplegics or the correction of foot deformities.
